- Star Drums & Lady Keys - Barbra Crain of Bc Enterprises met Gael on a blues theme cruise to the Caribbean in 1998 and, while she was sitting next to Gael, heard her softly sing along with Charles Brown, a featured artist and her idol. Barbra noticed what a beautiful voice she had, and already knew that Gael played piano and was classically trained growing up in her hometown of Chicago. Gael insisted she could not sing, only ‘sang harmonies in college’. What makes her story so fascinating is that Gael is a renowned scientist by day, and loves to torch the blues by night! I suggested the idea to Leslie of them becoming a duo, and Leslie was very enthusiastic about the idea. They started at the Old ‘Gator’ on Halloween in 1998, with only about 10 very long songs for 3 sets, and now Leslie and Gael have mastered over 200 tunes! Leslie and Barbra encouraged Gael to gain confidence and comfort with singing and, over the years, both have developed wonderful vocals in their own styles. We discovered along the way that Leslie and Gael created a very compatible musical partnership; as Gael knows how to determine keys and patterns, and plays by ear as well, and Leslie prefers to play drums and sing by feel to the story of the song. Gael is quite a musical library on her own with her knowledge of the old time greats, which surprised Leslie, as their musical tastes proved to be amazingly similar.
